Charming and Rare Antique French Chocolate Pot with wooden handle, White Enamelware, c, 1880

$84.99

This is a treasure of a little pot! Firstly, it's old, from the early days of enamelware making, c. 1880. The handle is wooden and riveted, rather than a metal handle soldered to the pot, which began about 1920.

Dimensions:

The bottom and side seams of the pot are easily visible and along with the spout, were all joined separately. Even the hinge to the lid was riveted to the side. These too point to this chocolatière's age as pre-1900. The simple white design with a dark blue filet along the top edge give it a very charming appearance.

I've called this a chocolate pot (chocolatière) because the handle is on the side and not on the back. But it could just have easily been used to serve coffee. Hot chocolate pots often had a hole in the center of the lid with a rounded wooden stick for stirring the chocolate at the bottom of the pot before pouring. Either way, it's perfectly charming!

What is wonderful about this lovely piece is its exceptional condition. It has been very well looked after all these 130+ years and has virtually no chipping of the enamel and only small traces of rust (please see the photos).

Whether filled with flowers or simply displayed as she is, this wonderful pot makes a simply gorgeous decorative piece as well as a glimpse into customs past.

I'm always here if you have questions. Thank you for stopping by Lasting Antiques. I hope to see you back soon.

About French Enameled Ware: "Every piece, for those who can see it, has a fascinating little detail. It can be the shape or the decoration, the color of a flower, a butterfly, a bird trying to catch a bee, a landscape in winter, a sunrise, or simply the elegant curve of a handle or spout that makes it so unique. This unlimited variety of style and design makes French enameled ware so incredibly alive and charming that even people who have not seen it before have to stop and admire it. ... What makes it so special and attractive is the use of colors and wonderful designs, so close to nature or so abstract (depending on the period), but always striving for esthetic and artistic perfection."
