This is a treasure of a little pot! Firstly, it's very old, from the earliest days of French enamelware making, c. 1880. The handle is wooden and riveted, rather than a metal handle soldered to the pot, which began about 1920. Other indications of its age are the separate bottom piece and the heavy seam on the body of the pot.
Dimensions: 8"H x 8.5"Wx 7"D, 4.25" diameter at bottom and 3.25" diameter at top opening
The bottom and side seams of the pot are easily visible and along with the spout, were all joined separately. Even the hinge to the lid was riveted to the side. These too point to this chocolatière's age as pre-1900. The design is simple and elegant with blue, white and gold filet giving it a very charming appearance.
What is wonderful about this lovely piece is its exceptional condition. It has been very well looked after all these 130+ years and has virtually no chipping of the enamel and only small traces of rust (please see the photos). All spots will be treated with museum-quality wax before shipping to ensure preservation.
Whether filled with flowers or simply displayed as she is, this wonderful pot makes a simply gorgeous decorative piece as well as a glimpse into customs past.
I'm always here if you have questions. Thank you for stopping by Lasting Antiques. I hope to see you back soon.
About French Enameled Ware: "Every piece, for those who can see it, has a fascinating little detail. It can be the shape or the decoration, the color of a flower, a butterfly, a bird trying to catch a bee, a landscape in winter, a sunrise, or simply the elegant curve of a handle or spout that makes it so unique. This unlimited variety of style and design makes French enameled ware so incredibly alive and charming that even people who have not seen it before have to stop and admire it. ... What makes it so special and attractive is the use of colors and wonderful designs, so close to nature or so abstract (depending on the period), but always striving for esthetic and artistic perfection."
