This is an antique French enamelware coffee pot, made at the end of the 19th century. It is signed on the bottom by the artist, who painted the beautifully hand-painted decor - raised enamel of gorgeous flowers in vibrant color. The exquisite decor is very fine in quality, texture and detail and appears on both sides of the coffee pot.
Hand-painted enamel is the most valuable and most collected. It required that the artist paint a single color at a time and then, continued only after the piece had been fired in the kiln. This required extreme skill and meticulous attention to detail and made these pieces very expensive to produce. Even in their day, they were considered luxury items.
The handle is riveted, not soldered, to the body confirming the age of this piece as dating from the early part of French enamelware history in the late 19th century.
This is indeed a very rare and exceptional coffee pot and highly collectable. Its colors are lively and vibrant and it is in good condition with no chips to the magnificent floral decor. There are no major chips, just some slight rusting consistent with its age. The rust spots will be sealed with special museum-quality wax, the same used by The British Museum. The lid went astray some time ago making this a perfect vase for silk flowers in the kitchen, bath, bedroom or anywhere for an added touch of French charm!
8 1/4 in. high x 9 in. wide (spout to handle), 3 5/8 in. diameter at opening and 5.5 in. diameter at the bottom.

About French Enameled Ware: "Every piece, for those who can see it, has a fascinating little detail. It can be the shape or the decoration, the color of a flower, a butterfly, a bird trying to catch a bee, a landscape in winter, a sunrise, or simply the elegant curve of a handle or spout that makes it so unique. This unlimited variety of style and design makes French enameled ware so incredibly alive and charming that even people who have not seen it before have to stop and admire it. ... What makes it so special and attractive is the use of colors and wonderful designs, so close to nature or so abstract (depending on the period), but always striving for aesthetic and artistic perfection." from French Enameled Ware for the Collector.
