Antique iron door knocker from France, c. 1880.
This door knocker is an elegant piece of metalwork from the late 19th century.
Displayed on a bookshelf, on the wall or as a paperweight, this exceptional piece is full of style and elegance!
Dimensions: 6 in long x 2.5 in wide x 2.5 deep.
The door knocker is complete with its backplate and 2 inch screw.
The delicate hand of a lady with a ringed finger in a ruffled cuff is gently holding a ball. This style of door knocker dates back to the Renaissance. The hand is a symbol of welcome and the ball, one of harmony. So, by taking the ball in one's hand to knock at the door, the visitor was showing their intent of coming in goodwill, accepting the welcome and harmony offered inside the door.
One must imagine a time when home was a haven of comfort and safety from the outside, often hostile, world and its rough and unpredictable threats. All that separated these two worlds was the front door with the door knocker the means of bringing these worlds together. Real thought and meaning went into every detail.
